Building Strong Partnerships for Seamless Distribution

“We look at our partners as extensions of our brand,” says Meagan Smith, Director of OHS, Quality, and Compliance for Dempsey Corporation.1

Dempsey is a leading specialty distributor in Canada, focusing on food ingredients as well as chemical and cosmetic ingredients. The company also has a food presence in the U.S. and a biotech division in France.

Smith emphasizes that Dempsey serves its customers by ensuring seamless distribution while maintaining high standards for quality and compliance.

“We want our partnerships to help us deliver that consistent customer experience,” she says.

Trusted Partnerships for Customer Success

Dempsey’s customers expect their orders to be picked, packed, and shipped with accuracy and efficiency. Smith explains that the company prioritizes strong relationships to gain a deep understanding of their clients’ business needs. Just as their clients depend on them, they rely on Canadian Alliance.

“Canadian Alliance is a valuable resource to our business,” she says. “They deliver a high level of expertise to our customers, helping us maintain our brand integrity. They pick and pack our orders in a manner that upholds the standard of quality we need.”

Transparency is fundamental in the industry, requiring partners with robust Warehouse Management Systems (WMS) and advanced technology. This is an area where Canadian Alliance excels.

“Through strategic warehousing partnerships like the one we have with Canadian Alliance, we are able to streamline our logistics, minimize disruptions, and reduce our costs,” says Smith.

Ensuring Compliance in a Highly Regulated Industry

The food and chemical industries are highly regulated, meaning Smith must trust her third-party logistics (3PL) partners. Both Dempsey and Canadian Alliance uphold rigorous compliance standards.

“Some of our products are regulated through Health Canada and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, so we ensure that we partner with warehouses like Canadian Alliance that have strong food safety policies in place,” says Smith. “We leverage our partnerships with third-party warehouses, and they are critical to our success in ensuring regulatory compliance and growth.”

Prioritizing Workplace Safety

Equally important is safety. Dempsey primarily utilizes Canadian Alliance for its food and beverage, industrial, and chemical sectors. Workplace safety and hazardous material handling are top priorities.

“It’s essential that we partner with warehouses like Canadian Alliance, where safety is taken seriously and employees are trained to handle the chemical products we’re delivering and storing,” says Smith.

Navigating Trade Challenges

As our interview takes place, headlines are dominated by the developing U.S.-Canada trade dispute. With operations on both sides of the border, Dempsey faces significant challenges.

“It’s definitely caused a lot of disruption,” says Smith. “Quite a few of our product portfolios are impacted.”

While it is too early to determine exactly how Dempsey will adjust its 3PL strategy, Smith anticipates potential changes in warehousing needs.

“Instead of routing through the U.S., some of our suppliers may ship directly into Canada,” she says. “That could increase our storage requirements for distribution warehouses, and we may leverage Canadian Alliance to support that volume.”

A Visit to Canadian Alliance

Smith and her colleagues recently traveled from Toronto to Vancouver to visit the Canadian Alliance facilities.

“The warehouse is in great shape, and I’m really pleased with the way our products are being stored,” she says.

She also commends Seyed Behnejad, Vice President and General Manager of Warehousing.

“He has been a great contact for us,” says Smith. “We’ve had special requests arise at the 11th hour, and he’s been very flexible, which we appreciate.”

In this industry, trust, flexibility, and accessibility are paramount.

“It’s reassuring to be able to reach someone at the top,” says Smith. “Seyed makes it happen for us, and we appreciate his partnership.”
